The Certified Medicine Aide accurately administers and documents, medications ordered by Medical Staff.Performs all tasks as indicated within Geriatric Nursing Assistant job description.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Effectively implements individualized resident care plans

2. Responds in a timely fashion to all resident requests

3. Provide timely, accurate and complete documentation on TAR’s and GNA Care Plans

4. Accurate, complete skin assessments and any changes reported immediately

5. Administers resident medications according to the institution’s policies and procedures without significant errors

6. Maintains accurate medication administration records as per established procedures; signs off medications as they are given

7. Notifies nurse in a timely fashion, of a change in a resident’s condition

8. Performs pulse and blood pressure measurements, and documents in MAR as needed prior to medication administration

9. Notifies nurse of a resident’s need for prn medication

10. Competently completes assignments in a timely manner

11. Administers medications to the assigned residents within the timeframe noted in the nursing care policies and procedures

12. Weekly and PRN update of resident’s ability to take medications to the charge nurse, i.e., the need for crushing or extra fluids

13. Administers prescribed routine oral, topical, suppositorial and optic medications as ordered by the Primary Care Provider

14. Participates actively in the care of the residents when assigned

15. Displays courtesy and respect

16. Manages difficult or emotional customer situations

17. Maintains resident confidentiality

18. Respond to all resident requests (verbally or call-light) for assistance

19. Resident privacy and dignity are maintained at all times

20. Smiles and consistently exudes a pleasant persona

21. Expresses genuine caring attitude to geriatric resident population

22. Competent in required job skills and knowledge, as evidenced by annual skills checklist

23. Knowledgeable in doing transfers safely

24. Ability to provide range of motion, proper positioning, and assist with resident ambulation

25. Proper use of Standard Precautions

26. Follows all Nursing Department Policies & Procedures

27. Administers medication with knowledge of action, route of administration, side effects and contraindications

28. Obtains vital signs prior to administering specific medications and promptly reports any changes from normal

29. Gives complete report to charge nurse as needed during the day and at the end of the shift on all residents on assignment

30. Shares ideas to solve problems on the unit and looks for ways to improve unit

31. Exhibits good listening and comprehension

32. Selects and uses appropriate communication methods

33. Notifies charge nurse before and after leaving the unit

34. Ability to work with others in a professional atmosphere

35. Willingness to assist others with their assignments

36. Acts as a role model for new employees

37. Contributes to building a positive team spirit

38. Uses all equipment safely and correctly

39. Utilizes gait belt appropriately

40. Reports malfunctioning equipment promptly

41. Reports off to oncoming staff re: residents’ overall condition and equipment status

42. Assists in Dining Room regularly as assigned

43. Demonstrates a time-conscious awareness, keeping non-essential interruptions to an absolute minimum in order to complete resident care priorities

44. Demonstrates knowledge of emergency policies and procedures

45. Practices appropriate infection control measures

46. Verifies the identity of the resident before administering medications / treatments

47. Maintains neat and organized medication cart

48. Is well organized and ready to start assignment at the end of report

49. Willingly attends inservices to increase job knowledge and skills

50. Does not require reminders to perform tasks and complete assignment

51. Attends all staff meetings on the unit when schedule to work

52. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by attending scheduled inservices and all inservices that are provided to facilitate compliance with government regulations

Current certification from the State Board of Nursing; current proof of required CEU’s as a Certified Medicine Aide.


Certified Geriatric Nursing Aide Certificate and placed on state registry.Certificate from and approved Medicine Aide course in the state
